Is compulsory earthquake insurance (DASK) required in Türkiye?
Yes. For homes covered by compulsory earthquake insurance (DASK), land registry offices do not complete registration transactions unless a valid policy is shown. Check the policy's term and holder before a sale.
Details
- The obligation comes from the Disaster Insurance Law No. 6305 and covers registered residential buildings and condominium units.
- The premium depends on the construction type, the earthquake risk of the province and the gross floor area. Cover aims to pay for rebuilding and has an upper limit set every year.
- Compulsory earthquake insurance covers the building only; contents need separate home insurance.
- Whether a policy is valid can be checked on DASK's own website with the policy number or the address code.
- Ask the insurance agent handling the sale how the policy passes to the new owner or whether a new one is needed.
Example
When a flat is sold, the land registry checks for a valid compulsory earthquake insurance policy; if there is none or it has expired, a policy has to be issued before the transfer.
Legal basis
- Disaster Insurance Law No. 6305, Art. 11 (policy check by land registry offices).
